Aim

The committee is looking for a Patient Voices Network member who will bring a holistic view and ensure the committee is following a transparent, fair and purposeful process in allocating residency positions and representing the public and patient perspective. The committee is looking to replace the previous PVN member who has completed their term.

Level of Engagement

This opportunity is at the level of consult (at a system-wide strategic leadership level) on the spectrum of engagement. The promise to you is that the health care partner will provide opportunity for feedback on analysis, alternatives and/or decisions. We will keep you informed, listen to and acknowledge concerns and aspirations, and provide feedback on how public input may influenced the decision.

Eligibility

This invitation is being extended to patient partners across BC who:

• Are comfortable sharing their opinions and perspectives with a large committee of senior health care administrators.
• Knowledge of physician specialties and sub-specialties, as well as an understanding of postgraduate medical education (residency) and the annual matching cycle and process (Canadian Resident Matching Service), will be considered an asset.
• Please note: this opportunity is limited to patient partners who have participated in a PVN orientation.
• Please note: follow-up casual interviews with a shortlist of candidates may be scheduled.

Logistics

• Time & location: Preliminary telephone meeting (30 minutes to an hour)
• Meetings occur on a quarterly basis and are currently scheduled for: November 20 (10:00 – 12:00), April 2020 / June 2020 / July 2020
• Vacancies: 1
• This is an ongoing committee. The patient partner is asked to commit to a one-year term with the possibility of continued participation.
• As part of the commitment to the Residency Allocation Subcommittee it will be optional to provide a written report identifying key findings, feedback and suggestions for continuous improvement.

Reimbursement

There are no anticipated expenses as teleconference participation is toll-free.

Background

The Residency Allocation Subcommittee (RAS) provides guidance and advice on the allocation of all Ministry of Health-funded residency positions to the University of British Columbia (UBC) postgraduate medical residency program. RAS is a high-functioning, collaborative group where government, health authorities and UBC come together to have informed discussions about resident allocation in alignment with patient and population health need. RAS meets four times per year, in alignment with the national Canadian Resident Matching System match cycle. The Residency Allocation Subcommittee incorporates physicians, UBC faculty members, residents, health authority representatives, Ministry of Health representatives and a patient, to determine and develop an effective allocation strategy for finite residency positions in BC. What is a Resident? Residents are physicians who are undergoing postgraduate medical education (residency) after the completion of a Doctor of Medicine (MD) undergraduate program. While residents do provide health care services, they must be supervised by a licensed physician. After residency training is complete, the physician is eligible to take their national college’s certification exams. Once certified to practice, the physician is eligible to apply for a full license to practice medicine independently.
