Background

The Residency Allocation Subcommittee (RAS) provides guidance and advice on the allocation of all Ministry of Health-funded residency positions to the University of British Columbia (UBC) postgraduate medical residency program. RAS is a high-functioning, collaborative group where government, health authorities and UBC come together to have informed discussions about resident allocation in alignment with patient and population health need. RAS meets four times per year, in alignment with the national Canadian Resident Matching System match cycle. The Residency Allocation Subcommittee incorporates physicians, UBC faculty members, residents, health authority representatives, Ministry of Health representatives and a patient, to determine and develop an effective allocation strategy for finite residency positions in BC. What is a Resident? Residents are physicians who are undergoing postgraduate medical education (residency) after the completion of a Doctor of Medicine (MD) undergraduate program. While residents do provide health care services, they must be supervised by a licensed physician. After residency training is complete, the physician is eligible to take their national college’s certification exams. Once certified to practice, the physician is eligible to apply for a full license to practice medicine independently. University of British Columbia Postgraduate Residency Program The Postgraduate Medical Education program at UBC uses a province-wide delivery model to engage nearly 1,400 postgraduate learners (residents) in training opportunities across the province. For more information, visit www.postgrad.med.ubc.ca. Canadian Resident Matching Service The Canadian Resident Matching Service is a national, independent, not-for-profit, fee-for-service organization that provides a fair, objective and transparent application and matching service for medical training throughout Canada. The Patient Voices Network has connected me to a community with the same drive to bring person- and family-centred care to the forefront. I am grateful for all opportunities I have been a part of thanks to PVN, which positively impacts patients like my sister and their caregivers. No matter how small, all patient engagement will help shape the future of health care and that I can stand behind
