Do you have an interest in helping to improve the quality of information given to heart surgery patients while in hospital and once discharged to aid in transition home post heart surgery? Would you be interested in meeting with staff to discuss your experience, including the teaching received while in hospital and after?

Aim

The aim is to ensure patients receive high quality pre and post discharge teaching and to better inform them once home to decrease potential issues or confusion, provide the resources required. The purpose of engaging patient partners in this work is that they can provide insight into their experience, including what was beneficial to them while in hospital and out and what was lacking? The role of the patient partner would be to present the value they received from teaching in hospital and once out and help review frequently asked questions, give information on what was lacking- give us a place to go to improve.

Level of Engagement

This opportunity is at the level of involve on the spectrum of engagement. The promise to you is that the health care partner will involve patients in planning and design phases to ensure ideas or concerns are considered and reflected in alternatives and recommendations.

Eligibility

  • comfortable sharing experience related to cardiac care
  • preference will be given to patient partner who has had open heart surgery

Logistics

Number of vacancies: 1 - 2 Location, Date, Time and Frequency:
  • Up to two in-person meetings at Kelowna General Hospital
  • Meetings will be held during June to August

Reimbursement

Expenses such as parking will be covered

Background

The 2w unit has been generating ideas that would benefit quality patient care while on post heart surgery floor. The feedback includes the value of follow up phone calls post discharge, feedback on helpful information before and after discharge and assistance developing frequently asked questions.
