Background

Primary health care services are the services traditionally provided by a family physician or nurse practitioner and their team, which may include professionals such as primary care nurses, social workers, mental health clinicians and other professionals. This initiative is part of the broader planning process for primary care reform in the Westshore. The Western Communities are the most rapidly growing populations in the province and lack of access to primary care is a serious problem. This is especially true for people facing more complex physical and mental health conditions and who have other barriers to accessing health care. The idea for a Community Health Centre came about to discuss this gap. We have involvement in several community non-profit organizations who offer services to marginalized populations, as well as Island Health, the South Island Division of Family Practice and the BC Association of Community Health Centres.

I was thrilled to discover the Patient Voices Network, where the array of places to be the voice of a patient is vast and incredibly interesting. Besides my ongoing “gig” with the BC Emergency Medicine Network, I have enjoyed being involved in several one-off initiatives. I love working with professionals who genuinely value the perspectives of their patient partners.
