Background

Canada Health InfoWay has an excellent web site that outlines patient portals: https://www.infoway-inforoute.ca/en/component/tags/tag/996-patient-portals Patient activation is part of the future of health care. Patient activation means having the knowledge, skills, and confidence to manage one's health and health-related outcomes. Several health care jurisdictions have established or enabled patient portals to provide patients with access to their personal health information. Northern Health has completed research and developed a strategy for patient portal implementation within both the acute, and primary and community health care settings within northern BC and has struck a steering committee and project team comprised of staff, physicians and leadership. The project has a project manager and a technical manager.

Patient and family partners should not be a check box on research proposals! They need to be involved right from the start. I know patient and family partners are doing their part by providing their knowledge to researchers from their lived experience.  It’s a win-win for us to work together through PVN to make sure our input drives improvements.
