Background

The steering committee will oversee our hospital and community COPD rehabilitation classes which take part in several gyms in Kelowna and West Kelowna. The program has grown considerably in the past 2-3 years and the intent is to set up a steering committee to guide practice and policy. The committee will be composed of health professionals, doctors, other health care staff and two patient partners. There is strong evidence that for those suffering from COPD that rehabilitation is a best practice intervention. The program currently supports:
  • 48 slots in our hospital classes
  • 50-80 patient slots in Community gyms – Parkinson Rec Center, Johnson-Bentley Aquatic Centre
  • Patients graduate to exercising on their own

PVN has really helped us engage with patient partners to improve health services at Northern Health.  It is more and more becoming the norm to include patients in the design, delivery and evaluation of health services.  PVN education and supports, involving patient partners, have enabled us to develop the capacity to include the patient voice to make care better and achieve better health outcomes.
