Open to: Patient partners across the province

Lead Organization or Department

Providence Health Care , Information Management and Information Systems (IMIS)

Aim

Providence Health Care (PHC) is planning to offer basic wi-fi for free and premium high-speed wi-fi at a cost to the public. We are inviting patient partners to join as full members of this committee reviewing and contributing to recommendations on various options to ensure we understand what is required to support our patients, residents and their friends and families.

Level of Engagement

This opportunity is at the level of involve on the spectrum of engagement. The promise to you is that the health care partner will involve patients in planning and design phases to ensure ideas or concerns are considered and reflected in alternatives and recommendations.

Eligibility

  • Preference is to recruit one patient partner with experience in an acute setting such as St. Paul's Hospital or Mount Saint Joseph, and one patient partner with experience in a Providence residential care setting
  • Experience using wireless devices such as smartphones, tablets or laptops
  • Access to computer for reviewing meeting materials (meeting minutes and agenda)
If you have a strong interest in this work but have not yet completed a PVN orientation and Volunteer Agreement, are unsure if your experience is a good fit or feel another format of engagement would work better with your availability, please contact the engagement leader directly.

Logistics

  • Vacancies: 2
  • Meetings will be held in downtown Vancouver
  • Date/time: Meetings are every other Wednesday afternoon for one hour starting in January. It is expected that these meetings will continue for 6-12 months. Patient partners can either come in person or have the option of teleconference participation.

Reimbursement

Expenses related to local travel (i.e. transit, parking up to $18/day, approved mileage) to attend the session will be reimbursed by Providence Health Care. No anticipated costs for teleconference participation.

Background

Historically, PHC has not offered wi-fi services. A decision has been made to offer free basic wi-fi and high-speed wi-fi at a cost. The wi-fi will span all of our sites (acute, residential care and clinics). PHC needs help in understanding the user experience. We want to understand how best to provide this Wi-Fi. Questions we hope to answer include:
  • How should we roll this out?
  • What types of communication would be helpful?
  • What support should be available?
  • How do we evaluate how the rollout of the wi-fi went?
Membership of this committee is diverse, with representation from Facilities, Biomed, Risk Management / Infection Prevention and Control, Care Experience, Communications, Professional Practice, Physicians, Clerical, Privacy, Volunteers, Foundation, Innovation, Media Services, Residential Care and patient/resident partners.

PVN has really helped us engage with patient partners to improve health services at Northern Health.  It is more and more becoming the norm to include patients in the design, delivery and evaluation of health services.  PVN education and supports, involving patient partners, have enabled us to develop the capacity to include the patient voice to make care better and achieve better health outcomes.
