Aim

The Medicine Quality Council strives to ensure high quality, standardized and equitable care for all patients wherever they live within the Island Health region. We are committed to the development of a high quality program and understand that the patient and family experience of care is crucial in achieving this goal. The inclusion of patient representatives at monthly meetings will help to ensure that patients inform improvements to policies and procedures. Patient representatives will be invited to consider their experiences of care within the medicine program in order to provide feedback on topics discussed at each meeting.

This opportunity is at the level of collaborate on the spectrum of engagement. The promise to you is that the health care partner will work together with you to formulate solutions and incorporate your advice and recommendations into the decisions to the maximum extent possible.

Eligibility

• Adult, 18 years and older • English speaking • A patient partner would ideally be someone who has had recent lived experience of being a patient or family caregiver (inpatient or outpatient) in Island Health and has a keen interest in healthcare quality. • Experience working with groups that are co-located (for example, in Victoria as well as up island) • Please note:
  • This opportunity is not open to patient partners who are currently employed by Island Health
  • The placement process for this opportunity may include an informal interview between the volunteer and the Medicine Quality Council Co-Chairs.
  • Successful applicants must complete a PVN orientation session and a Volunteer Agreement. If you have not attended an orientation session but you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Ashley Clark directly to see if accommodations may be possible.

Logistics

Number of vacancies: up to 4 Date/Time: meetings are monthly - the second Wednesday morning (7:30-9am) Location: teleconference and/or videoconference Commitment: up to 12 months

Reimbursement

There are currently no anticipated costs associated with this opportunity, as meetings are via teleconference and/or videoconferece. When/if we transition back to in-person meetings, pre-approved transportation & parking costs will be reimbursed by Island Health.

Background

The Medicine Quality Council will be providing a governance structure to medical inpatient and outpatient services across Island Health. Programs include, but are not limited to, Internal Medicine, Gastro Intestinal, Rheumatology, Dermatology, Respirology, Infectious Disease, and Hospital Medicine.

The Medicine Quality Council is responsible to set and ensure consistent standards and processes exist to support high quality care for patients within the inpatient and outpatient setting. This includes understanding and learning from patient safety events and feedback from our patients and clients. Other Medicine Quality Council members will include nurses, allied health professionals (i.e. Respiratory therapy), physicians, managers, directors, and other supports such as professional practice and quality consultants.
