Background

The goal of this project is to improve the overall quality of the healthcare and workplace experience for, and address barriers to, accessing services faced by Transgender, Non-Binary, and Two Spirit (TNB2S) patients and employees in the Fraser Health region. Fraser Health Ethics and Diversity Services (FHEDS) is working with an external consulting group, called TransFocus, to determine what changes could be made that would benefit patients who identify as TNB2S. The experience of employees and patients who are part of the TNB2S population is characterized by exclusion and inequitable access to care and services. Although currently hidden, the severity of the harm and negative impact that exclusion and inequity is having on health, wellbeing and quality of life of these individuals cannot be overlooked. This project begins with a consultation phase, where patients and staff who identify as TNB2S will have opportunities to provide feedback through surveys and focus groups on the challenges that they face when they are using the healthcare system or in the workplace. An important part of this consultation process is to find out what is most important to TNB2S patients and staff, so that the recommendations and changes will best address those needs. Then, this feedback will be analysed, along with other research that has been done in this area, to come up with a number of recommendations for how the system can be improved for TNB2S patients and staff.
