Background

At St Paul’s hospital, the Family Presence Policy replaced traditional visiting hours for family - people who are therapeutic partners in health and well being of each person receiving care and treatment at the hospital. Unfortunately, because of factors including violent history, intoxication, stress and fear of unknown, staff are often threatened with violence and are approached with intimidation; this instills fear in direct care staff and endangers patient safety. A working group of stakeholders - patient care managers; clinical nurse leaders, nurse educators, hospital security leader, social work leader will join with patient and family partners to develop a strategy to sustain PFCC in such escalated situations. Where those of us in the room may have debated policy or wording, patient voices made sure patients were top of mind. And as a result, significant improvements were made to simplify something that was otherwise complex. Patient voices at the table bring us back to reality in terms of what we are trying to achieve.
