Member, Family Presence and Respectful Clinical Areas Working Group

Balancing a supportive family presence policy while ensuring a safe, respectful work and clinical care area is an ongoing challenge at St Paul’s Hospital. We are seeking four patient partners to join us in a working group designed to create safe and respectful work flows and guidelines, that are person- and family-centred, to ensure a safe space to work and receive care and treatments.

Open to: Patient partners in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley

Aim

• To develop guidelines to sustain person- and family-centred care (PFCC) for working with family members who exhibit threatening or intimidating behaviours
• Patient partners will help by providing input into guidelines for direct care staff; creating clear messaging for patients and families on family presence criteria and developing scripts for simulation sessions for direct care staff.

This opportunity is at the level of collaborate on the spectrum of engagement. The promise to you is that the health care partner will work together with you to formulate solutions and incorporate your advice and recommendations into the decisions to the maximum extent possible.

Eligibility

Open to patient partners from in Mainland and Fraser Valley communities who have:

• Experience working in groups
• Access to a computer to review documents

Logistics

• Vacancies: 4
• Date/Time: Monday mornings, details to be determined in consultation with patient partners
• Location: Downtown Vancouver
• Commitment: 4, 2-hour meetings, over a 4-month timeframe, In-Person and teleconference

Reimbursement

Mileage = $0.52/km - up to 60 Kms each way Parking = $18/day maximum Transit costs Details of this process, and the length of time for reimbursement will be shared directly with the patient partner.

Background

At St Paul’s hospital, the Family Presence Policy replaced traditional visiting hours for family - people who are therapeutic partners in health and well being of each person receiving care and treatment at the hospital. Unfortunately, because of factors including violent history, intoxication, stress and fear of unknown, staff are often threatened with violence and are approached with intimidation; this instills fear in direct care staff and endangers patient safety. A working group of stakeholders - patient care managers; clinical nurse leaders, nurse educators, hospital security leader, social work leader will join with patient and family partners to develop a strategy to sustain PFCC in such escalated situations.
