Are you a patient partner who is interested in participating in the vision and development of a new acute care unit to serve the mental health and substance use needs of children and youth for short-term admissions? We would like to invite you to be part of this opportunity to build the service to meet the needs of our patients, families and those who support them.

Lead Organization/Department

Interior Health – Kelowna General Hospital (KGH), Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Stabilization Unit

Aim

The goal of this initiative is to ensure we include the patient and family centered approach of KGH in the development of this new inpatient unit at KGH. The patient partner’s role will be to act as an advisor as we develop the vision and plan for this new unit which will serve the needs of children and youth who require an acute care admission for mental health and substance concerns.

Level of Engagement

This opportunity is at the level of involve on the spectrum of engagement. The promise to you is that the health care partner will involve patient partners from PVN in planning and design phases to ensure ideas or concerns are considered and reflected in alternatives and recommendations.

Eligibility

• Experience with the mental health and substance use system, preferably with children and youth
• Comfortable sharing your or your family’s story
• Interest in being part of the development of a new unit from vision to opening (development, capital, staffing, etc.)

Logistics

• Number of vacancies: 2
• Location, Date, Time and Frequency:

  • Meetings will be monthly and may increase as the project continues after the first year
  • At this time all meetings will primarily be virtual
  • At the beginning of the fiscal year (typically April 1) membership will be reviewed to ensure 2 patient voices partners are represented

Reimbursement

At this time no reimbursable expenses are anticipated as the meetings are virtual.

Background

The purpose of the KGH Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Stabilization Unit (CAPSU) Working Group is to envision, plan and develop a proposal to build a unit to serve the needs of children and youth in the identified catchment area who require a short-term, acute admission to support their mental health and substance use needs.

In addition to patient voices partners, physicians, KGH and MHSU leadership, MHSU Network leadership, IH Data analysis leads, direct care staff and quality improvement staff will be involved.
Documents such as Terms of Reference, planning documents such as a Decision Brief and a Model of Care will be developed.

All members of the working group will be asked to work in partnership with others, communicate respectfully and effectively, adhere to the IH Confidentiality Agreement, attend scheduled meetings and respect cultural differences.
