Aim

The Adult Intensive Care Unit Quality Governance Council is part of a group of Island Health quality councils that are responsible to set and meet high standards of care and to maintain a continuous commitment to quality improvement. Patient partners will be invited to draw upon their experiences of care and community knowledge to provide feedback on items discussed at Council meetings, such as tertiary and community site admission, transfer criteria, as well as standard and policy setting. This will assist the Council to better understand and consider the perspectives of patients and families, and to ensure that decisions and priorities reflect the needs and goals of patients who rely on these services.

Level of Engagement

This opportunity is at the level of involve on the spectrum of engagement (www.iap2.org). The promise to you is that the health care partner will involve patients in planning and design phases to ensure ideas or concerns are considered and reflected in alternatives and recommendations.

Eligibility

• A dynamic communicator who is comfortable providing constructive feedback in a group setting.
• Experience as a patient or caregiver with intensive care services would be an asset, but is not required.
• Willing to travel to Comox, Duncan, Nanaimo, Campbell River or Victoria to attend meetings; ideally patient partners will represent the regional diversity of the Island Health region.
• If you have a strong interest in this work but have not yet completed a PVN orientation and Volunteer Agreement, are unsure if your experience is a good fit or feel another format of engagement would work better with your availability, please contact Leah Smith directly.
• The placement process for this opportunity may include an informal interview between the patient partner and the health care partner.

Logistics

• Vacancies: 2
• Date and time: Meetings are held on a quarterly basis, usually between 8:30am – 11am. The next meeting will be held in December 2017.
• Location: In-person attendance in Comox, Duncan, Nanaimo, Campbell River and Victoria is required. These sites will we linked via video-conference.
• Term: 1 year with the possibility of extension.
• Time commitment: Attendance at quarterly meetings lasting 2.5 hours.
• Materials will be provided one week prior to each meeting and should be reviewed in advance in order to contribute to discussions. Review of meeting materials may take approximately 1 to 2 hours.

Reimbursement

Pre-approved mileage and parking will be reimbursed, as well as pre-approved transit expenses such as bus fare.

Background

The Adult Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Quality Governance Council provides oversight and leadership at 7 locations across Island Health. More information on ICU services is available here. The Council reviews and discusses quality indicators as reported by each site and identifies priorities for improvement. Policy and practice changes, as well as patient safety events and concerns are also addressed by this group. The Council is co-chaired by a Director of Clinical Operations and a Medical Director. The group of approximately 20 council members includes medical and administrative leaders such as site managers and coordinators, clinical nurse educators, physicians, respiratory therapists and pharmacists, as well as representatives from the quality and patient safety portfolio.
