Volunteer Opportunity

Have you previously participated in a PQI initiative? What was your experience like?
The experience of patient partners with the PQI program is a major area of focus for the current evaluation of NH’s PQI program. Help us improve PQI by telling us about your experiences.

Lead Organization/Department

Northern Health, Physician Quality Improvement (PQI)

Aim

The Northern Health PQI team routinely engages with patient partners in a variety of quality improvement projects. Yet, little is known about what patient partners think and feel about their participation: how well is it working, or not working, for them? Do they have what they need to participate effectively? What obstacles do they experience? What do they think could be improved?

This series of phone interviews is meant to answer those questions, and to help the PQI team make work with patient partners as rewarding and effective as possible.

Level of Engagement

This opportunity is at the level of consult on the spectrum of engagement. The promise to you is that the health care partner will listen to and acknowledge your ideas and concerns, and provide feedback on how your input affected the decision.

Eligibility

• If you have a strong interest in this work but have not yet completed a PVN orientation and Volunteer Agreement, are unsure if your experience is a good fit or feel another format of engagement would work better with your availability, please contact Cathy Almost.

Logistics

Vacancies: 4-5
Date and Time: during the summer, at the patient partner’s convenience
Location: telephone
Commitment: a single interview (up to 1h) followed up with a written summary of the interview for comment (optional)

Reimbursement

There are not any expenses anticipated for this meeting.

Background

The PQI Evaluator for Northern Health, assisted by the NH PQI Evaluation Committee and in consultation with the NH PQI team has identified patient partner experience as an area of focus for this year’s evaluation of the PQI program. This decision was prompted by identifying patient and family centeredness as one of the key objectives of the PQI program, and by the desire of the PQI team to better understand and improve the experiences of patient partners engaging in PQI initiatives.

The interviews will be conducted, analysed, and reported out on by the PQI Evaluator for NH. The NH PQI Evaluation committee and the PQI team have had input into the interview questions and format. There is a risk to the confidentiality of responses, given the fairly small pool of patient partners who have had engagement with the PQI program in the North. The Evaluator will take all reasonable measures to prevent the identity of participants from being discovered by members of the PQI team and others. This will include: not sharing the identity of interviewees with the PQI team (including other members of the PQI Evaluation Committee); communicating interview themes/findings in aggregate only (direct quotations may be used for illustration purposes, without attribution to a particular participant); excluding information that could plausibly be used to identify specific participants from any written or verbal communications (e.g. participants’ age, gender, ethnicity, community/region, details of involvement in specific projects, etc.).

To avoid the risk that participant views will be misrepresented, the Evaluator will provide each participant with a themed summary of their interview for comment/edits.

The interviews will be recorded to ensure all information is captured. Recordings will be deleted once they are transcribed. The Evaluator will keep your identity confidential. We cannot truly understand the experiences of patient partners with PQI without your input. Please help us improve the PQI program!
