Gamification is rapidly spreading internationally as an exciting way to engage people in change. What’s Gamification? It means using designs and elements of games in non-gaming contexts such as health care. This interactive workshop will teach you how motivational theory and game design can engage patients, families and those working within the health care system to improve care. Game on!

Aim

The goal of this educational workshop is to provide participants with an understanding of how motivational theory and game design can engage patients, families and those working within the health care system to improve care. By the end of the workshop, you will be able to describe an example of gamification applied to a health improvement context, as well as develop a gamified health improvement initiative to engage and motivate positive behaviour change.

Level of Engagement

This opportunity is at the level of inform on the spectrum of engagement (www.iap2.org). The promise to you is that you will be provided with balanced and objective information to assist in understanding alternatives and solutions.

Eligibility

  • Patient partners from the Vancouver Island region
  • Interested in learning about gamification in a health improvement context
  • Previously attended a PVN orientation session and completed the Volunteer Agreement. If you have not attended an orientation session but are interested in this opportunity, please contact Shannon Sahota directly to see if accommodations may be possible.

Reimbursement

Approved expenses related to travel will be reimbursed by the BC Patient Safety & Quality Council.

Background

The Council regularly offers workshops, seminars and mini-courses on different topics related to improving patient safety and quality of care in BC. This particular workshop will be led by Shari McKeown, Director of Clinical Improvement, and Geoff Schierbeck, Quality Leader with the BC Patient Safety & Quality Council. Our workshops are open to all who are interested in broadening their learning around quality of care and are typically offered to health care providers across BC. We are excited to be able to provide a few spots at no cost for PVN Patient Partners! This particular workshop is being offered in Victoria, BC. We will offer similar opportunities for patient partners to attend workshops in various other regions soon.
