Do you have experience supporting an adult at end of life in British Columbia? Do you have experience making decisions with, or on behalf of a loved one about critical health care treatments in a hospital setting? The Ministry of Health is seeking a patient and/or family caregiver to participate on a provincial government advisory committee that will look at how a patient’s goals of care are documented on a Medical Orders for Scope of Treatment form and how this documentation guides medical treatment provided in an emergency situation.

Open to: Patient partners across the province

Lead Organization or Department

Ministry of Health, Seniors Services Branch

Aim

The advisory committee will make recommendations related to the process and documentation of Medical Orders for Scope of Treatment (MOST). This will include recommendations for one standard provincial MOST form.

Level of Engagement

This opportunity is at the level of consult on the spectrum of engagement (www.iap2.org). The promise to you is that the health care partner will listen to and acknowledge your input and provide feedback on how your input influenced the decision. The ideas, input and concerns of all advisory committee members will be carefully considered.

Eligibility

  • Experience with sharing and/or documenting wishes for future health care (your wishes or those of a close friend or relative)
  • Personal experience with the health system in a critical care situation or at end of life (your own experience or supporting another person)
  • Comfort sharing your experience in regard to this work
  • Comfort communicating with health care leaders and practitioners, including physicians, in a large group setting
  • Able to participate on teleconferences (toll free)
If you have a strong interest in this work but have not yet completed a PVN orientation and Volunteer Agreement, are unsure if your experience is a good fit or feel another format of engagement would work better with your availability, please contact Ryan Sidorchuk directly.

Logistics

  • Vacancies: 2
  • The advisory committee/working group is expected to meet every two months by teleconference beginning Fall 2017 and continuing for approximately one year. In addition, members may be asked to participate on task specific working groups that will provide recommendations to the advisory committee.

Reimbursement

Toll free teleconference line so there will not be any expenses.

Background

Medical Orders for Scope of Treatment (MOST) forms are used in the health care system to communicate a patient’s goals of care and subsequently medical treatments the patient should receive if they become incapable and cannot guide their care at the time treatment is needed. The focus of this project is to develop a standardized MOST form across BC and guidelines that support how the form is used within the health system. The patient and/or family voice is integral to this work. Other advisory committee members will include government representatives, health care administrators, and health care professionals (physicians and nurses).

Patient and family partners should not be a check box on research proposals! They need to be involved right from the start. I know patient and family partners are doing their part by providing their knowledge to researchers from their lived experience.  It’s a win-win for us to work together through PVN to make sure our input drives improvements.
