Co-designer, Patient Engagement Workshop

Have you participated as a patient partner on engagements and seen things that have gone well, and had experiences where things have not met your expectations? The Council is designing a new full day workshop for health care partners and patient partners to learn about how to ensure they create meaningful roles for patient partners in their initiatives. Join us in planning the workshop for health care and patient partners to learn how to do it better!

Aim

Engaging with patients and their caregivers can transform care. In this interactive workshop we will teach advanced skills in conducting patient engagement. This workshop will focus on providing an applied learning approach that will draw on real case studies throughout the province. Patient partners will help us design the content and delivery methods to ensure we are spreading the right message, and that the workshop will be suitable to both patient partners and health care partners who attend.

Level of Engagement

This opportunity is at the level of involve on the spectrum of engagement. The promise to you is that the health care partner will involve patients in planning and design phases to ensure ideas or concerns are considered and reflected in alternatives and recommendations.

Eligibility

• We are seeking patient partners who have participated in at least one engagement at the level of involve or collaborate (e.g. working group, advisory committee)
• Comfortable sharing your thoughts/experiences with a small group over WebEx
• Experience planning workshops or knowledge of adult education principles would be an asset.

Logistics

• Vacancies: 2
• The first workshop will be delivered in late October. We anticipate that we will meet three to four times during business hours between August and late October. You will also be asked to provide feedback and review documents between meetings.

No expenses are anticipated.

Background

We have reviewed feedback from health care partners and patient partners who have engaged through the Patient Voices Network and there is a strong recognition from both patient and health care partners that an emphasis on building knowledge and capacity to create meaningful partnerships in improving the quality of care is a crucial next step. In February 2019 the PPE Team provided an on-line Patient Engagement Learning series which included introductory level information on authentic engagement and how to be an effective partner. In participant surveys from the webinars, as well as interviews with stakeholders (patients and health care teams) and the Council team we heard there was a desire for more learning, especially in-person, interactive sessions with examples and hands on learning. We are planning that the workshops will be delivered in partnership by PPE Engagement Leaders, and local patient and health care partners. We are planning to host two workshops in the coming year, one in Vancouver and one in Kelowna. The patient partners who help co-design the sessions do not need to be the ones who deliver them. As we get closer to the workshop dates, we will be positing invitations for patient partners to participate as facilitators/presenters during the workshop as well as participants.
