Measurement and the effective use of data are cornerstones of any improvement effort, from incremental changes to radical transformations, but it can be difficult to know where to begin. Patient partners are invited to attend a workshop that explores how data can be used to drive the improvements we wish to see: setting up measurement systems that work, analyzing data to uncover new insights and monitoring improvements over time.

Aim

Not a technical person? Don’t worry, this workshop isn’t about crunching numbers in Excel or using statistical software. Instead, we take a practical, hands-on approach to exploring how data can be used to answer questions, understand problems and drive meaningful change. Participants in this workshop will largely be health authority employees or staff from similar health organizations. Our hope in sponsoring patient partners to attend the workshop is to expand perspectives represented and shared at the event. Additionally, through attending the workshop, patient partners will further develop their own skills and knowledge in the design thinking methodology, which can be applied in future situations outside of the workshop. By the end of this workshop, you’ll be able to:
  • Describe the different purposes of measurement
  • Explain how measurement supports improvement efforts
  • Define key measures for an improvement initiative
  • Examine variation to gain a deeper understanding of a system
  • Use visual displays to analyze data and monitor improvement over time
  • Interpret data to generate new insights to guide improvement efforts

Eligibility

Previously attended a PVN orientation session and completed the Volunteer Agreement. If you have not attended an orientation session but are interested in this opportunity, please contact Shannon Sahota directly to see if accommodations may be possible.

Logistics

Vacancies: 2 Location, Date, Time: The workshop will take place at the BC Patient Safety & Quality Council head office in Vancouver on Tuesday, December 4, 2018 from 830 to 1630. Commitment: One-time workshop

Reimbursement

BCPSQC will provide each patient partner with a discount code to waive the $100 workshop registration fee. Approved expenses related to travel will also be reimbursed by the BC Patient Safety & Quality Council.

Background

The BCPSQC Learning & Capability Development team works to build capability and capacity for improvement through a variety of avenues: Quality Academy, Board & Executive Learning Series, Quality Forum, online learning opportunities like the #QualityChat and Quality Café that are open to anyone and free to join as well as in-person workshops, such as this upcoming Data-Driven Improvement session. Quality improvement requires knowledgeable and skilled people at all levels of BC’s health system. Change is more likely to be sustained if the people leading it are properly equipped to do so. Therefore, the BCPSQC has committed to ensure that the members of the Patient Voices Network are included in learning opportunities to ensure that they feel comfortable and informed when working on quality improvement initiatives throughout the system.
