Word in the Network: Building a Network ‘Community’

Posted

Categories: Patient Voice Mail

We’re working to learn from health care and patient partners to build connections and include all voices in BC. To accomplish this, we’ve developed working groups, led in partnership with patients, to start the conversation and determine the work needed to create a supportive environment for PVN members:

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Working Group – With trust as the foundation, the goals of this working group are a welcoming approach and including all voices in health care improvement work. How does PVN get there? What’s needed to evolve PVN and support our partners to build that foundation? The core of this team’s work will focus on breaking down necessary actions. To join, see more here.

Indigenous Inclusion Working Group – In partnership with First Nations Health Authority (FNHA), we’re hoping to transform our approach to reflect what matters to Indigenous Peoples. This team of health care and patient partners are focused on adapting PVN so that more Indigenous voices can be heard. To join, see more here.

Connections Working Group – Connection before content: The hallmark of any successful network is the opportunity to connect as humans. This team is focused on how we lean into the depth of experiences across our partners and create a “sense of community.”

Ambassador Working Group – The goal of this group is to form an energized team of patient partners making connections. It’s working on a plan to create opportunities for connections and support and to assist patient partners and health care partners in outreach and co-facilitation. Having Patient Partner Ambassadors provides us with an opportunity to increase the sense of cohesiveness and community in PVN.

Orientation/Onboarding Working Group – This dynamic group is tackling everything orientation-related, from sign-up to orientation and creating resources that help new patient partners feel prepared to participate. Learning from our patient partners is incredibly important during this process; we are reviewing all the evaluations completed after orientation and hope to conduct telephone interviews with our network members. We will continue to share updates and happenings that keep you close to the work happening across PVN. If you have any further questions or comments, please reach out to your Engagement Leader.

Patient and family partners should not be a check box on research proposals! They need to be involved right from the start. I know patient and family partners are doing their part by providing their knowledge to researchers from their lived experience.  It’s a win-win for us to work together through PVN to make sure our input drives improvements.
