Patient Engagement in BC Is Evolving and so Is Our Team!

Posted • Last updated

As we continue into the new year, we’re excited to announce some changes within our Patient & Public Engagement team.

Since the BC Patient Safety & Quality Council started administering PVN in December 2015, the province’s patient engagement needs have grown and evolved along with the size and diversity of our network. Now, we’re thrilled to announce that we’ve improved our structure to work more effectively, prioritize support where our partners need it the most and achieve our vision for the future of health care improvement in BC.

Our new structure includes three new roles: a PVN manager and two strategic initiatives leaders.

The PVN manager will provide operational leadership for the network with a focus on volunteer management best practices, while the strategic initiatives leaders will collaborate on patient and public engagement initiatives with internal, provincial and national stakeholders. Four engagement leaders, each representing a different region of BC, will continue to provide patient engagement support across the province while offering local support in their home region.

Understand Our New Structure

We’re happy to say that the new roles will be filled with familiar faces, as our new structure has led to some shifts within the Council’s Patient & Public Engagement (PPE) team:

  • Previously an engagement leader in the Interior region, Jacquelyne Foidart has accepted the manager, Patient Voices Network position. She’ll bring her extensive experience as an engagement leader to this new role leading the network. Learn more about Jacquelyne.
  • Kira Tozer has accepted a full-time position as strategic initiatives leader. She will transition from her previous role as engagement leader on Vancouver Island when she returns from maternity leave in June 2020. Her strategic mindset will be a great asset to her new position. Learn more about Kira.
  • Cassy Mitchell will split her time 50/50 between an engagement leader role and the second strategic initiatives leader position. She will play an essential role in bridging these two areas of work and bring a fresh perspective to strategic initiatives. Learn more about Cassy.

In the role of engagement leaders across the province, we now have:

  • Ashley Clark on Vancouver Island
  • Cathy Almost in the North
  • Jami Brown in the Fraser Valley & Lower Mainland
  • Carol Stathers in the Interior

Meet Jacquelyne, Our New Manager

New PVN Manager Jacquelyne FoidartYou may have had the opportunity to meet Jacquelyne Foidart during her years of work as an engagement leader in the Interior. But in case you haven’t, we’ve asked Jacquelyne some questions so you could get to know more about her and her transition to the new role of PVN manager:

– What excites you the most about the new PVN manager role with the Patient & Public Engagement team?

Jacquelyne: “I’ve had the pleasure of hearing the impacts, benefits and challenges of patient engagement directly from patient and health care partners for over six years as an engagement leader with PVN. It’s those stories and the rapid advancement of patient engagement in BC that sparked my excitement for the new role of PVN manager to help our team meet our partners’ needs.”

– What’s next?

“We have an incredibly skilled, passionate team that is receptive and empathetic to the shifting needs of the network’s patient and health care partners. The PPE team has been listening, observing and measuring patient engagement in BC for 10 years and is overflowing with ideas to enhance patient engagement support in BC. I’m excited to step into this new role with a focus on putting these ideas into action to reach our goal of patient engagement support that puts patients and health care partners first.”

– What can PVN members expect from this restructure in the PPE team?

“PVN members can expect to receive a high level of support from the PPE team across the province. They’ll hear from us about opportunities to strategize and co-create changes that impact how patient engagement is supported in BC.”

The question I like to ask health care employees is ‘Who is this for?’ and ‘Do we have the right people at the table?’ As a health care employee, I see how easy it is to fall into doing for, rather than doing with patients. The voices of the patient, family and caregiver are essential to ensure the patient is central to the direction and focus of the work being done.
